Almost As Good As Chocolate: Shashi Tharoor on The Colbert Report

  • Niranjana · 2 years ago
I missed this one; thanks for posting!
The whole Shashi Tharoor = man's name is real funny, esp. because I've always thought of Shashi as a woman's name. Like Shashi Deshpande... Now you can't go wrong with a good manly name like Stephen :-)

Yeah, I didn't know any Shashi-men in India. But I also know of a woman named Trevor! So, it just goes to show... er... something...

Never been interested in Bollywood ??...Shashi Kapoor ("Mere Paas Maan Hai" fame??)
High time you had some "India Focus" (Rather than you advising Stephen: "And Stephen, keep up the India focus ....."...I will definitely like!!!)

Clearly you haven't read this post (see the other comments) or this
    blog very much.

And to me, India is much, much more than Bollywood and more
importantly, Indian cinema is much, much more than Bollywood. And yes,
I am not really interested in Bollywood.

I thought Shashi held his own with Colbert. He was smart, witty, and quick on the take without being pedantic which he is prone to sometimes. I won't be surprised if he becomes a Minister of State.

There is Shashi Kapoor the bollywood film actor. He is a guy.
  • Shripriya · 2 years ago
@ Satish - yes, it will be interesting to see what he does.

@ Kalpesh - THAT is a brilliant point! The thing is that I think everyone thinks of him as "Shashi Kapoor" i.e. the whole name and no one thinks of him as just Shashi and that's why the association is not obvious. But still, great point :)

May be its the other way round. Why do women in India have man names. I found it amusing that Dharmendra's first wife's name is Prakash.
Niranjana sounds manly to me ;)
